Re: Christmas Dinner

  • My mom usually does a prime rib on Christmas Day but I don't think she is doing it because of her jaw problems and her not being able to enjoy eating right now. She gets it mainly for herself anyway since it is her favorite plus it is only for DH, myself, Ava Nichol, My mom, step dad and 17 yo little brother.

We will eat around 1 on Christmas day with the main dish being ham at MIL's ex husband's family.

We will do snacks and apps at FIL's around 4 on Christmas Day.

I don't really have a favorite part. Growing up we never had a Christmas Dinner.

I am going to try to get doughnuts for Christmas morning at my Mom's though which would be nice :)

  • We have a nice dinner at my parents house.  It consists of Prime Rib and lobster.  My mouth is watering already.

I'm usually in charge of a few of the sides, and do rosemary potatoes and almond green beans. We also usually have some yummy wine with it too.

SMIL does biscuits and sausage gravy for dinner on Christmas Eve, and her and FIL rant and rave about them.  It's actually my least favorite meal for the holiday because it's bland, and I usually end up eating like 4 biscuits with jelly on them as my meal.

  • Mmmmm Prime rib and Lobster? I am jealous! Not so jealous of the biscuits and gravy.

I forgot about the dinner we do on ChristmasEEve. DH's Grandma makes this tortellini soup that the whole family raves about but I don't like it. It is like watered down tomato soup with remade tortellinis in it. But this year MIL is bringing her AMAZINGTurkey Noodle Soup so I am aactually excites to eat dinner there this year!

  • We usually just snack on desserts Christmas Eve when we open presents.

On Christmas Day, we usually have dinner around 1 and the main dish is always the Turkey. We pretty much have a repeat of Thanksgiving on Christmas Day. The only difference being we don't serve Fall type pies and have cakes and chocolates instead.

  • Christmas Eve we go traditional Jewish style and order Chinese.

For Christmas dinner, DH and I are making:

For picking at in the afternoon --
-baked brie with dried cranberries and walnuts
    -meat and cheese platter
    -kielbasa
    -chips and dips

    Dinner --
-a big roast with potatoes, carrots, onions, and mushrooms
    -sausage stuffing
-a few other sides I can't think of for the life of me

    Dessert --
-paleo dark chocolate orange thumbprint cookies
-some type of cake that has yet to be decided
-jubilee roll (family tradition for DH)

Definitely jealous of prime rib and lobster!

  • We do dinner with my family on Christmas Eve and always do the traditional passing of the Christmas Wafers from church and then we have salmon loaf.  My mom grew up eating that and so did I.  DH was skeptical of it at first, but after trying it he likes it!

We kind of get dinner (they're already eating or have eaten by the time we get there) with my ILs on Christmas Day and it's basically a repeat of Thanksgiving.  Though our main dessert is birthday cake for DH's aunt since her birthday is on Christmas.  There's also pie and cookies.

I never have to make anything since we're always the ones traveling all over, but I do bring a massive cookie tray to each house each day.

  • @jennahack that is my contribution to all the dinners/events we go to as well. This year I have had three family members ask what I was planning on bringing and I reminded them of the cookies and they were like oh okay then. They wanted me to bring more. Like the cookies are just expected now so I am supposed to find time to make another dish. Ugh. Nope just bringing the cookies and if you want to complain I can just not bring cookies next year. :P

  • I come from a huge italian family. we've always done lasagna, meatballs, eggplant parm, sausage...the whole gamet.

once the family got really big they decided it was easier to just do pasta with all those sides instead of lasagna.

so when I got back to Ohio I get pasta.

If I stay on the East coast with my IL's for christmas I make lasagna, meatballs, and salads for everyone.

I love it and couldn't imagine it any other way.

  • Mmmmm I would love a big Italian meal :)

  • For Christmas Eve, we go to my ILs and have fish. They usually order fried calamari, shrimp and lobster. I don't really eat any of it, but MIL usually makes pasta and that's what I eat. When they get to the lobster I usually go play with my nephew since I can't stand the smell.

Christmas day we're going to my dad's for breakfast and to exchange gifts. For dinner we go to my aunt's house. We eat waaay too much food. It starts with antipast then we have pasta and Italian wedding soup that my grandma makes, then for real dinner she usually makes filet mignon. I don't really like red meat, so I have a taste but am usually so full that I just pick on the sides.

@JennaHack and @wiggyslilsis - cookies are my contribution to all of our visits too! I make 5 or 6 different kinds and meet up with my mom so we can make our trays together. Everyone looks forward to them.

  • Do you guys do a Christmas Dinner? If so what do you have for a main course? What is your favorite part of the meal?

H and I usually go out to eat Christmas Eve, but it's not usually fancy, in the past it's been Denny's because they're open. We're super low key!

Christmas Day I usually cook, because we refuse to travel. I usually make a ham with a Dr. Pepper glaze,  mashed potatoes or mac and cheese, and some veggies. Dessert is cookies! My favorite is the ham. It's delicious!

This year my mom is bringing most of dinner to us. I think she's making a roast of some sort, but I'm not sure. My dad (surprisingly.. her ex husband) requested to not have ham, so I know it's not that. I'm in charge of dessert, so I think I'm going to make a peanut butter pie and some other things. Of course there will be cookies too.

I guess my favorite part is having my family together. It doesn't happen often and this year my sister is boycotting her in-laws because her husband never wants to go anywhere but there. So, 2 of our nieces will be here. It's rare for all of us to get together because my parents are divorced.
